A white elephant exchange is a party game where gifts can be "stolen". Good white elephant gifts are fun, useful to almost anyone and within the agreed budget.

How it works

  1. Everyone brings one wrapped gift within an agreed price limit.
  2. Players draw numbers to set the order.
  3. Player 1 opens a gift. Each next player either opens a new gift or steals one that is already open.
  4. Someone whose gift is stolen can open a new one or steal from someone else.
  5. Common rules: a gift can only be stolen two or three times, and you cannot steal back immediately.

Gift ideas people actually want

  • A good insulated tumbler or water bottle
  • A cozy throw blanket
  • A board or card game for groups
  • Gourmet hot chocolate or coffee set
  • A portable phone charger
  • A cast-iron pan or a good kitchen knife
  • Fun socks with a pair of slippers
  • A plant in a nice pot
  • LED string lights
  • A scratch-off map or travel journal
  • Hot sauce or spice sampler
  • A mini waffle maker
  • Bluetooth tracker for keys
  • A puzzle that is a talking point
  • A movie night kit: popcorn, sweets and a voucher

Funny but still useful

  • An oversized mug
  • A "desk exercise" kit
  • A cookbook for an absurd theme
  • A giant chocolate bar

Tips

  • Stick to the price limit.
  • Wrap well; mystery helps.
  • Avoid personal items such as perfume or clothing sizes.
